ARRIVAL DAY

Introduction Lecture

The story of Sweetings Pond begins with its geologic history, which sets the stage for the unique community of animals that inhabit it. This background helps prepare participants for what they may encounter as they explore the site or snorkel in its waters. Its human history adds further context, illuminating the landscape features, cultural elements and recent conservation efforts that visitors will observe as they move through the area.

Seahorses! After seeing the system the day before, lecture 2 will work with the natural curiosity of seeing seahorses in the wild and will answer a range of questions, while enjoying afternoon tea. What are seahorses? Where are they found? How did this unique system with dads doing the work evolve? What do we know about the seahorses of Sweetings Pond?

We recommend a lunch stop at Tippy’s, a local favorite for seaside Bahamian fare before you ride back to the resort.

Lecture Three

The Pond at night: The nighttime biology of Sweetings Pond is magical. This lecture will set the stage for the natural beauty of the system at night, discuss the research on nocturnal seahorses, octopus and other fish species, and set expectations for the physical context of snorkeling at night.

On your last night, head to Seahorse National Park for a night snorkel in Sweetings Pond to see bioluminescence, octopus and seahorses.
