Seven Species to Look for on the Nature Trail

The ocean may be our first love, but the natural beauty of the Bahamas continues on land, too. See for yourself during a stroll along our mile-long Nature Trail, which was created in consultation with the Bahamas National Trust as part of our Bahamas hotel’s ongoing efforts to preserve indigenous species. The path winds through a variety of ecosystems, including a lush forest and wetlands filled with native vegetation. Birds and flora are plentiful throughout the easy-to-moderate loop. Here, seven species you’re almost certain to see.

Orchid

Across The Cove, orchids bloom in brilliant shades of white and pink. Along the trail, keep your eyes peeled for a species that’s harder to spot: the indigenous butterfly orchid. They are small and green but flower in a greenish-yellow, then reddish-purple tone.

Kamalame Trees

These giants are known for their characteristic dark orange, almost red trunks and branches. The leaves have long been used medicinally in teas.

Mangrove Trees

A critical piece of the Bahamian ecosystem, mangrove trees seem to sprout from the water and provide habitat for much of the island’s marine life. They also help improve water quality and sequester carbon. Four species—red, black, buttonwood (or grey) and white—can be found in the Bahamas.

Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker

Listen for these minute woodpeckers, who drill shallow holes in trees in order to feed on the sap and insects within.

Cape May Warbler

These songbirds are identifiable due to the distinctive tiger stripes on their chest and chestnut patches around their eyes.

Bananaquit

Fueled by sugar, these small birds have yellow bellies and curved bills that make it easier to sip nectar.

Bahama Woodstar

A small, brightly colored hummingbird, the woodstars are indigenous to the islands and are important pollinators. They can be spotted year-round.

Tip: Guests can walk the trail on a self-guided tour (ask for binoculars and bird identification cards before you head out) or request a guide to share insights along the route.
