Behind The Cove's Art & Design - All Inspired by Nature
Walking into the lounge at Freedom Restaurant & Sushi Bar, your eyes are immediately drawn to the incredible installation of white, marine-grade rope knots created by by San Francisco–based artist Windy Chien. The custom-designed artwork was inspired by the sea foam that’s generated as ocean waves lap at The Cove’s shores.
In 2016, Chien was inspired to try to tie a different kind of knot every day for an entire year. The project led to a new creative direction for the Chinese-American artist who has since revolutionized knot art with her imaginative installations, all of which are crafted from Sunbrella cordage. Similar to the water, Chien describes how knots “manifest tension, the direction of pull and forces working in harmony and in opposition.”
Chien’s work can be found throughout The Cove, but hers is far from the only celebration of art and design on the property. The Cove’s entire 40-acre resort speaks to our majestic surroundings, from teak millwork that mimics Eleuthera’s ever-present driftwood to limestone flooring that is intended to evoke the rocky landscape. A neutral color palette is brightened with blues (the ocean and sky), greens (the lush vegetation) and the familiar shades of Gregory Town pineapples.
In Freedom Restaurant, the ceramics emulate the hard corals found off of Turtle Point, while hanging plants above the sushi bar recall the vegetation that covers the island’s cliffs.
We also host an Artist in Residence program, through which we support local talents and offer guests the opportunity to connect with the community, learn new skills and express themselves creatively. Most recently, we hosted watercolor artist Lauren Albury, and mosaic artist Amanda Pace will be featured from November 27 to December 31, 2025.
