The Story Behind Harbour Island’s Famous Pink Sand Beach
On the eastern side of Harbour Island, a stroll along the beach looks a little different. That’s because the sand underfoot has a rosy hue instead of the standard beige. It’s a unique site, one people travel from all over the world to experience in person.
The pale, cotton-candy color is derived from Foraminifera, microscopic coral insects that have bright pink or red shells. They live deep in reefs, under rocks, in caves and on the sea floor. When they die, the movement of the waves crushes their shells; as they wash ashore, they mix with pieces of coral and the sand. (Tip: The unexpected color is brightest where the sand is wet and is most vivid in early morning or around sunset.) The sand is known for being silky and cool year-round.
The most famous, and aptly named, Pink Sand Beach is more than three miles long and sits on the Atlantic Ocean side of Harbour Island. But there are more of these blush-colored beaches to be discovered on Eleuthera, including French Leave Beach near Governor’s Harbour, a short, scenic drive from The Cove, and Lighthouse Beach at the southern tip.
Less than two dozen of these beaches exist across the world. We’re lucky that Harbour Island’s namesake beach is widely considered the most beautiful example due to its size and the intensity of the pink coloring. (Others can be found in places as varied as Crete, Greece, French Polynesia, Indonesia and Barbados.)
Just 35 minutes north of The Cove Eleuthera, Harbour Island makes for an easy and rewarding day trip.
